(race date estimated)Gear Up Against Kids Cancer Race Description
"Gear Up Against Kids Cancer” ride was created to bring community awareness to the 15,000+ children annually diagnosed with cancer and raise much-needed funds to help researchers develop less toxic and more effective treatments for childhood cancer.
100% of the funds raised help fuel local research and directly supports the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute – UT Health San Antonio, and their mission to translate today’s research discoveries into tomorrow’s treatments.

Use of Funds Raised
A core mission of the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute is to train the next generation of scientists with expertise specific to childhood cancer. Funds raised by the Gear Up Against Kids Cancer bike ride will be earmarked for investment in innovative projects proposed by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows conducting childhood cancer research. Funds will be awarded through a competitive peer-reviewed process.
Impact:
By supporting young investigators during their training period, these pilot funds will encourage the pursuit of high risk, innovative research under the direction of a GCCRI Principal Investigator. These types of projects typically fare poorly in the traditional grant review process due to a lack of preliminary data. By funding pilot studies, this program will enhance the overall research portfolio of Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute and encourage new innovative research.
Why Do We Ride?
The “Gear Up Against Kids Cancer” ride was created to bring community awareness to the 15,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed in patients under 20 years of age annually. Each year, roughly 1,780 children and adolescents won’t survive their battle with cancer, making it the most common cause of disease-related mortality for children.
However, there is hope.
With 19 research labs and program initiatives like the Pediatric Drug Discovery Initiative (PDDI), Center for Innovation in Drug Discovery (CIDD) and Institute for Drug Development (IDD), our mission is to translate today’s discoveries in childhood cancer into more effective, less toxic therapies and advance bench-to-bedside drug discovery and development.
All the funds raised at this event will directly support the “local research, global impact” of the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute
